Here are some tips to protect yourself from impersonation scams:

Be cautious of unsolicited communication:

  • Don’t trust caller ID: Scammers can easily spoof caller ID to make it appear as if they are  calling from a legitimate source.  
  • Be wary of unexpected requests: Legitimate organizations will rarely ask for sensitive information via  email, text, or phone call.  
  • Don’t click on links or open attachments: In suspicious emails or texts, links and attachments can lead to malware or phishing websites. This is obvious, but sometimes they still get us.

  • Contact the organization directly: Use a phone number or email address you know is legitimate to verify the request. If it is the website URL e.g., Bank of America, Citibank, etc., go visit their official website not the link provided to you.

  • Be aware of urgent requests: Scammers often create a sense of urgency to pressure you into making quick decisions.  

Protect your personal information:

  • Use strong passwords: Create unique, complex passwords for all your online accounts.
